A day in the life of an American Soldier. The personal passages of everything from family life to war.

What have you done for your country today?

American Soldier says,

The title is bold but true.

I woke up this morning and read about what is going on in New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama. I felt as a Soldier I should see what I could do to help. So as the old slogan goes:

“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

JFK

So there is a good chance that I may be able to go and assist my fellow Americans in a time of need. Right here at home.

If I go then my surgery would be put off. The satisfaction of helping far outweighs the small pain I may have to deal with.

Nothing concrete and nothing guaranteed. However, my name is in the hat.

UPDATE - Check out some things you can do to assist. Soldiers’ Angel’s has initiated Operation Katrina Relief Fund.

Thoughts in Solitude

American Soldier says,

This evening I took a break from the hectic routine I’ve been use to. Between putting final touches on the book and maintaining my everyday life. Things have gotten to be very busy for me. So this evening I popped the top of a very nice wine. Macon La Roche Vineuse 2002 Chardonnay was the exact name. I went out to my front porch and sat down. My wife bought me this custom wine glass from a faire a few weeks back. It’s huge! So I filled the glass to the top and took a seat. You can feel the weather is starting to change here. The wind lingers a little longer and it’s cooler. The sky was cloudy but I could hear the sound of an airplane flying in the sky. This is a typical sound in the area where I live. The person who fly’s it does crazy stunts in the air. On clear days you can see him barreling through the air like a bird.

I walked around my yard barefoot. Feeling the grass under my feet I took a deep breath of the air. It’s amazing how much different the air smells like just 20 minutes away. My air smells fresh and the air in the next town over smells like your typical city.

I thought about a lot of things and tried to make sense of certain things going on in my life. It’s weird how one moment you can think that this is all there is to life, and then the next thing you know something new comes along. I thought to myself that I am grateful that I was able to wake up and enjoy another day. My mind drifted off to my brothers in a far off country. I felt a bit homesick but happy at the same time. I have been able to keep in contact with some of them and I am so happy to get pictures of them from time to time. I came across a picture of one of my soldiers. He looked good and happy. That makes me happy.

I finished up my glass and walk back to my house. I turned and looked around and had this sense of peace come over me. I only wonder what will happen this coming year. I thought to myself.

Another chapter yet written

American Soldier says,

Today accompanied by my wife and children I met with my new unit and took the oath of enlistment. The picture above was found on the net. I thought it was significant because the photo are Soldiers re-enlisting at Ziggurat of Ur, a famous archaeological site in Iraq, built around 2100 BC to honor the moon god Nanna.

Just like them, I didn’t need to re-enlist. I did it because in this day and age, where there is so much unpredictability, there needs to be Soldiers who will stand to defend our beloved country and freedoms. No matter if you are a supporter or not, you can count on a Soldier to preserve what many people take for granted. Freedom!

Send a prayer out for Soldier’s Mom and Noah

American Soldier says,

I’ve been following the progress of a fellow soldier and a mom who is awaiting word on her son. Noah is his name and he is part of the 3ID. He was injured by an IED and is now in Germany getting fixed up. His mom is waiting to get word on what they are going to do with him and when/if she can go see him.

I am sure any parent would understand her frustration. So bag and passport ready she is on standby. She does not have a paypal link so I am going to put up a link directly to Soldiers’ Angels. They are going to be assisting her and I would really love to assist in any way I could. So please send any donations to Soldiers’ Angels. The person who has been in contact with Soldier’s Mom is Patti Bader. If you send a donation please add the comment that it is for Soldier’s Mom via Patti Bader.

With any luck Soldier’s Mom will receive the help that she needs in this time of need. Even if the Army pays for the plane ticket, they don’t take care of everything.

The donation link is at the top left on the Soldiers’ Angels site.
