A day in the life of an American Soldier. The personal passages of everything from family life to war.

Rumsfeld down…

American Soldier says,

What can I say. It’s a double edge sword. From a person who firmly believes in this war, it’s hard to see the architect of the Iraq war go away.

nuff said on my part!

I’m not sure if Rumsfeld resigning is a good thing or not. Perhaps. I don’t believe he mismanaged the war as accused, however. I just think that perhaps a changing of the guard will bring in new ideas, and perhaps Gates will listen to the generals in Iraq more than Rumsfeld did.

  2. dICKY fREON Says:

I hate to see him go. I think the Bush haters do more harm to the war effort and the possibility of winning the war than anyone actively participating in the war itself, from leadership on down the chain. The “love the soldier, hate the war” people kill us. What they really mean is”hate the soldier, hate the war” but they are so worried they’ll “offend” someone they spin the word. If we lose this war you can blame it on the same people that lost Vietnam. The hippies, all except now THEY are in power. The American soldier is screwed!

  3. John Ryan Says:

The American people have shown that they no longer support or approve of this war.
The Democrats are going to have a hard time finding a way out of the quicksand of Iraq.
It is a lot easier to begin a war than to end it.

  4. Terry McGhee Says:

I think Gates will be the “DAIMOND;” that is from Apocalypse Now. HOWEVER, Rumsfield at least shoots straighter that Chaney. Just joking, (cont.), After the capture of Sadam things got sour on strategy. Rumsfield had to go.
Sadly, The Dems are using it for another political gain.

Q: HOW long will it take for Democrats to turn America into another EURO-ABIA? (Should we base it on the aftermath of the 2008 presidential?)

Funny, France seems to running their mouth after their Muslim fires.

  5. Terry McGhee Says:

    error: …than Chaney

  6. McCain Says:

For the brave men and women of our military, and for lesser mortals everywhere, RightLinx will host our 3rd weekly USO dance party Friday night. This is a John Kerry-free zone where conservatives know how to party.

We support our troops and actually mean it!!!

  7. John Ryan Says:

No comments about the editorials in ARMY TIMES,NAVY TIMES, etc ?

  8. Ric Says:

AS: I wish you would expound more about why the Rumsfeld resignation is a “double edge sword.” Apparently, you must think the strategy of the war needs to be different. The big question facing our country today is where do we go from here. People criticize the left for not having a plan for Iraq. People criticize the right for not having a plan for Iraq. And in my mind, “stay to win” is not a plan. So my question to you, as a reader who respects your service and perspective, is what should be the plan at this juncture?

  9. Lenore Says:

Maybe Rummy decided there was no way he could work with a democrat controlled congress. He tried to resign a number of times before. I hope Rummy gets out there and says exactly what’s on his mind, what he thinks of the cut and runners. He can now do it without anything holding him back. I will be the first in line to buy a book he writes.

I have a very hard time understanding the big city dwellers, it is not boresville USA that is the target for Islamic terror. But it IS small town USA that gets it. It seems small town USA cares more about the safety of the big city dwellers than they care about themselves. Afterall it is the city dwellers who just voted in the people who have red taped the WOT, handcuffed our troops, intelligence agencies and our criminal justice system. Being from small town USA I know I am the last on the Islamic terrorist target list. I will still cry for the deaths of the big city folk, just as I did on 9/11. But this time I will have in the back of my mind that they were warned and they dropped the ball and because of that they have allowed damage to inocent Americans to have happened. The next attack I will not blame only on the terrorists.

I thank all our troops for their service, they are in my prayers. I thank the troops for keeping the terrorists busy over there so our city dwellers can live peacefully over here. Better for them to see justice from our military on foreign lands, than red tape from our justice system in our home land.
Happy Veterans Day to all who served.

  10. Chad Says:

Happy Veterans Day, buddy. Thanks for doing what you have. Savin a beer for ya.

  11. David Says:

As to the editorials in the Army, Navy, Air force times? Well, for one, they are published by the same basic group, the Army Times Publishing Company, which is a part of the Gannett Company.

As to their editorials, about it was about time for Rumsfeld to resign, my comment is, “So?”

If John Ryan had taken a minute to read the comments about the editorials, he would have found that opinions were all across the board. There was no consensus, except for editorials that came from the same group of individuals. One other interesting side note, there is no name given as to who wrote the piece. We have no idea the qualifications of the man (or woman) who wrote the article.

I will look at the hard copy and see if I can find out anything more.

  12. DamdYankee Says:

The timing seemed a bit poor. I believe it had been arrainged prior and they had thought it would be done in a bit less of a downfall. Important thing is that you folks over there get what you need to do what you have to do. I support a number of contractors in Iraq (as well as Kyrgistan - can never get that right without looking it up- and Afghanistan) so I am getting a better picture of events than most. I believe in the potential of what was proposed for Iraq. A democracy, whether in the same fashion as ours or one based more on the British model, seems less inclined to go on the offensive unless provoked. It is much harder to indoctranate a people when they have an example of a better way as their neighbor. There are things that struck me odd from the onset of the war (such as the lack of enemy captures being held until after the end of hostilities), but in not having served and only being a history buff, you tend to want totrust that those in the know were making the correct choices.

I am not a veteran, I came of age just as the draft closed down in the 70’s. I do not feel worthy to salute you, but you all have a tip of my hat and my and my wife’s grattitude. I just pray that they will allow you to finish the job now. If not, I fear that it will be the task of my youngest daughter’s generation to do so, and facing an enemy of greater power. I will raise her with that in mind, though I pray it will not be necessary.

God Bless you all, and those who you have left at home. We will continue to keep all of you in our prayers.

    Ric,

Give me a day to fully respond. Weekends are my off times typically. I will get you an expanded version of my meaning.

  14. Jesus Maldonado Says:

In response to “lenore’s” comment. I’m an ex-navy “city dweller” who was on the USS John F. Kennedy when the planes hit the WTC towers, in Operation Enduring Freedom etc.. It just strikes me that someone from small town USA, would criticize the very people who have a very deep respect for this nation. Not to label anyone in the cities, but there are “city dwellers” who defend this nation as well, and that don’t agree with George Bush’s or the Don’s way of executing this war. War is no joke, and just using it as a tactic to forceably make others bow to our ideas is not ok, especially by men who’ve never seen war, or ever went to war.
I will pray and send my hopes to middle america to wake up and realize that middle america isn’t the only place that holds “american values” whatever those may be. I will pray that they understand that freedom of thought, expression, and speech of any kind should be cherished, not censored. I will pray that they open their eyes that they live in a multi cultural, racial, and ethnic world. I will pray that they understand that being isolated in the middle of nowhere is no excuse to not understand the larger world outside “boresville USA.”
I do believe that New York City was a mockery way of life and the Sodom and Gomora of the modern era, before September eleventh to many who lived in conservative “boresville USA.” We don’t need your tears, and outcries for the “city folk” we need you to come to the city and experience our multi cultural, fast paced, politically charged way of life. Besides, I do believe many politicians live in larger cities, and if they started in smaller towns, they now live in larger cities.
When you say you won’t only blame the terrorists for the “next” killing of innocent americans, i can only say i weep for those who live in an isolated america and don’t understand the larger scale of politics and american interaction with other nations. I’m sure our sons and daughters will be happy when they discover we owe billions of dollars to angry chinese communists from whom we’ve borrowed money to wage this war. May our american politics bless our outsourcing and low wage working in foreign countries, who in turn bless our middle american families who lose their jobs to them. I guess we all should just remain ignorant on the reality of our government then, right? It’s not o.k. to just see things in just one color, thrive on knowledge, not ignorance.
In the end, may George W. Bush understand that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and this past congress has shown that. It still shows that the american people understand that absolute, totalitarian ideals that diminish the power of the people must be abolished as stated in the constitution, it is our right. One may blame “hippies,” i hate hippies, i live in the city and consider my self a realist. I realize we must take a different approach to matters, than the “manifest destiny” like way of it. If the democrats fail, it will give the american people a different view in 2008, which is up to the people to decide. ‘Til then, may america function as it does, free.

  15. D.G. Says:

Jesus Maldonado, God Bless You!! You just said nearly everything I have thought over the past 6 years! Thank God there are still thinking patriotic people left in America!

I myself served in Iraq during the first war in Iraq, I refer to it as my High School graduation present from Bush Sr. However, Bush Sr. showed restraint, because he was a realist, a statesman educated in the cold war realities of maintaining the “balance of power.”

The same neo-conservatives that pressured Bush Sr. to roll into Baghdad, Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Wolfowitz were then marginalized, and thought to be a “little bit nuts,” under Bush Sr. Unfortunately, these same neo-conservatives found a pliant president in a post 9/11 world with George W., and finally got their way, for better or worse. Policy shifted from conservative to neo-conservative. Our goal change from simply maintaining the “balance of power,” to waging aggressive pre-emptive war to not only defeat our enemies, but to then remake them into our own image, (a democracy). This political philosophy is as radical to American politics , up until 9/11, as the use of terrorism was in the middle east, until the Radical Islamists brought it into the mainstream in Egypt during the 1950’s.

Jesus Maldonado, God Bless ya! My other concerns regarding the course of our Nation goes directly to the WOT and the political manipulation that was fueled it. In 2004, a simply great BBC Documentary came out, entitled, The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear… It was aired widely in the U.K, but not in the United States, if you watch it you may understand way. Check out this 6 part series if you wish to start to understand how we got were we are right now, including good ole Rummy’s contributions to dis-information and altering America policy direction since President Nixon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjRDnBLPuII

Knowledge is power, Jesus I end by quoting you, “It’s not o.k. to just see things in just one color, thrive on knowledge, not ignorance.”

  16. Security Forces Again Says:

    - American Soldier… great site
    - Its funny how this is all said to be Bush’s fault even though the majority of the world did in-fact believe there were WMD’s. That not with standing, why can the majority of americans not see that Pres. Clinton should have started this action in the 90’s the 1st, 2nd or 17th time Sadaam failed to live up to his end of the U.N. peace treaty? Instead he reduces the military man power re-hires the G.I.’s to do the same jobs as civilians and boosts his employement numbers… GREAT
    - Why don’t we also add some blame to Iran since every time we start to get things settled down (i.e: elections, new gov’t) suddenly the fighting breaks out again. Do we know see the Iranians stirring the pot by killing a few Shiites and setting up the sunnis for the blame….hhhmmmmm instant civil uprising.. wierd.
    - That being said, and if anyone is still reading this, let’s not piss and moan over the “mis-informations” and the “failure to do anything” theories of either political party. Instead realize we have an oppertunity to finally tryand stabilize a part of the world so maybe when my 3 year old son grows up he wont wonder what day the planes are gonna fall from the sky again. Keeping in mind that ofcourse there will always be “terrorists” of one sort or another but hopefully not such an orginized large scale group after we get done with them.
    - So after a 6 year absance i once again don my BDU’s trading my 16 for an M-4 (miss my M-60) and I’l see those who believe in the cause and stand for something in the desert.

THANK YOU FOR THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO STAYED IN SERVICE EVEN AFTER THINGS GOT MESSY… AND TO THE NEW PEOPLE COMING ONBOARD, THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR MAKING US PROUD

I meant no offense by this statement. I was a city dweller for 30 years. In the cities of most states, the liberals are # 1. Our cities are the most populated areas, they voted the same people into office that have said things the terrorists and their supporters repeat. Some very vicious things I might add about our troops. Reed yelled “we killed the patriot act“. Kerry said our soldiers are terrorizing Iraq woman and children in the dead of night. Durbin compared our troops and treatment of prisoners with the gulags of the Soviet Union.
If you noticed I said I would still cry for the lose of American citizens? But in the back of my mind I would always remember how they voted for people from a party that has caused nothing but hate and intolerance toward other Americans who are trying to fight this deadly enemy. I can excuse ignorance up till 9/11/01 , but not 5 plus years later.

I will repeat what I find bewildering, they are the ones who’s communities would be targeted, I would think they would want to do everything they could to stop it, more so than the person from small town USA.

 Hi AS soory this is late but I wanted to say Thank-You again on Veterans Day

  19. John Ryan Says:

87% of the Jewish vote went to the Democrats.
15,000 Americans are murdered each year by their fellow citizens.
Are we in more danger of being killed by a terrorist or an American?

  20. Moon Mullins Says:

I was raised a dem. That party is not what it once was. It is the party that invented the politics of hate and fear. They need illegal immigrants to be “forgiven” because their power base is in those who are stuck in poverty and on the federal dole. They presume they will get 70% of their vote so it is about their power. Pelosi uses them in her vast vineyards where her million dollars a year in wine income gets a greater profit margin. That is public record for all you whine asses that claim they are the party for the working man. They are the party for the working man that they can disarm and keep in their control. We have a large vets reunion not far from my home and it has been going on for almost 25 years. All vets are welcome. We have people from all over America come to it. I talked to several from the east coast this year and a group of them told me they have never been anywhere that had more flags flying proudly than in the midwest. I understand the differences in our living and the living in the cities. The pace their precludes much that is important. The media control public thought almost entirely. We have more balance because we are not as centralized and monopolized. We also do not have the voting power and even as I write I know that the powers that be will soon take away our Post Offices just as they have all other of our small town services. Economies of scale may destroy us before long but until then I cherish my life here, understand urban blight and keep my hope in tact for people in all places.
I would ask that you city dwellers remember our Flag and fly it however you can. It might send a quiet message to the Schummers and Clintons. They believe they have you all under their thumbs and perhaps they do. You keep sending Barney Frank and Teddy Kennedy back to DC and you will allow Wm. Jefferson, the thief from Lousyanna in office as well. It is funny that ethics only matter if they fail on the Republican side of the aisle. All you city dwellers have given up your weapons so only your criminals are armed now. I will stay where I am.
