A day in the life of an American Soldier. The personal passages of everything from family life to war.

Saddam Dead!

American Soldier says,

You should have been drilled in the head while hiding in that spider hole. However the wait had to of sucked knowing you were going to be killed by hanging. The noose being placed around your neck. The silence right before the floor dropped.

Lights out!

I would say he is in The Lords Hands now, but for some reason I really doubt that.
I worry over the consequences, but with men like yourself to protect me and my sons, I know we will get through this as well.

THANK YOU A.S!!! You and your family are amazing.

  2. Ric Says:

AS: I am interested to know if you support the 30,000 increase in troops and whether you think 30,000 is a sufficient increase in troops to get the job done in Iraq.

  3. American Soldier Says:

In short, I will say that I do support it. However I think we need more than 30,000.

There are many factors involved and mere numbers won’t fix the situation exactly.

  4. David Says:

Well, Saddam had his day in court. That is more than many of his victims can say, if they could speak.

I doubt if anyone has any idea how this will play out in Iraq, but at least, the Iraqi people had their say in his demise.

I would state, however, I doubt if there were 72 virgins (raisins, goats, or whatever) waiting for him.

  5. F. Watts Says:

Dear AS, I would like you to discuss in more detail your opinion regarding the 30,000 increase in troops. Why is it not enough and what do you think it will take to get the job done.

  6. Hubrious Says:

Yeah Saddam is dead. Did he deserve it? Yes!
Was it worth it? Not in my opinion.

I find it ironic, that many of the same American leaders that supported him, armed him, and, shook is hand in official U.S. Government capacity, (in order to defend you and I), have now spent 3000 American lives, tens of thousands of American wounded, and the lives hundreds of thousands of liberated Iraqis, to kill him.

Since there obviously has been little policy change since the time Gerold Ford was in office, I wonder what future enemy our leaders are making “friends” with right now?

  7. Moon Mullins Says:

Hubrious, I disagree with much of what you write but I cannot dispute this in total. We have chosen what appears to be the lesser of evils many times only to see power corrupt entirely. There is an old saying about that which remains accurate and sadly universal. I think we have done the same in South America. Correcting mistakes is costly but unfortunately for the sake of many we have to do that too.

  8. David Says:

There is also an old saying, that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

However, in such an arrangement, each side feels that they can use this to their own advantage. History is full of countries and groups that have applied that principal when dealing with an adversary. Moon is right, we as a country have to play the hand that is dealt us, and many a time we have to go with the lesser of two evils. That are the only options open, as to do nothing (which is the current argument of the liberals on the GWOT) is even a greater evil.

  9. Chad Says:

Lets not forget that we armed Saddam so Iraq would not lose to Iran (who was a greater threat). We didn’t arm Saddam just so he could gas his own people… that came later, and as you can see… he has finally paid the price for it.

So to all the liberals who would love to post a link to the photo of Rummy and Saddam shaking hands… Learn the facts, and stop being a propaganda tool.

  10. Moon Mullins Says:

Good job Chad. You might call them propoganda fools, not tools.

  11. Moon Mullins Says:

Does anyone remember who was in control of the House when Saddam was empowered? Or Khadafi? Or Idi Amin? Does anyone remember who was protected in Haiti in the 90s? Do some of these people need to be reminded who had three chances to capture Osama? Who is the biggest war criminal in history? One of these clowns attributed that title to Pres. Bush. They forget Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, and the illustrious Chinese Communists and the Father of North Korea. They ignore what a stupid, ill-advised pull out in Vietnam caused with an enables Khmyr Rouge. Sadly, the list is not nearly exhausted. AS thank you over and over for what you do.

  12. Hubrious Says:

Moon you cannot blame the Democrats for everything. In fact proportionally, the republican party carries the lion share of domestic and international policy failure since Calvin Coolidge. What you write is politically biased and leaves out mass amounts of facts that could incriminate both parties, but the republicans are far more responsible for Iran and Iraq than the Democrats.

However the conservative policy of “interference” within the internal affairs of other sovereign nations as a means of foreign policy has been discredited by world events for many decades now. It has caused far more wasted death and accomplished no positive results, ever.

With specific regard to Iraq, the republican administration under Ford, (presidents set foreign policy not the “house”), with Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld as part of the Ford administration, and George H Bush head of the CIA, empowered Saddam. Saddam then openly murdered his political opposition within the Iraqi parliament, destroying democracy in Iraq. The United States did nothing about it and may even have expected it. At the time, the United States was also allied with Iran via the Shah. So the “lesser of two evils” is a redundant excuse for supporting Saddam. In fact, two republican administrations supported Saddam up until Saddam invaded Kuwait. These two republican administrations continued to support Saddam years after Saddam gassed his own people and many years after he gassed the Iranians.

Actual recorded history destroys your premise that, “it’s the Democrat’s fault”.

  13. Moon Mullins Says:

Shooter is so right about you! The Dems voted for what we do now and were in power when we went to Nam and when the cowardly choice to leave without victory was made. I do not blame them for all that has happened. Again you have read incorrectly. History does not support you in this; ony your version of revisionist history does. I do blame them for the devisiveness that has permeated our country for 40 years. The Dems were all over things when Clinton had an aspirin factory blasted and killed a janitor. The Dems chose to walk away from numerous attacks on Americans were killed in the 70s, 80s and 90s. You cannot negotiate from any position other than one of power. Clinton sent the weakest President we have ever had to give the North Korean’s nuclear power. The Dems still support the UN and that is the biggest joke in history. I suppose the oil for food was all made up by conservatives. UN leadership directly sponsored that theft. H, I do not know your age or anything about you. I suspect you are a good person but naive as hell. You have been thoroughly brainwashed and that is the waste of a good mind. Why do you suppose text books now exclude any form a national patriotism and history that gives anything but your side of things? The DUMBING DOWN OF A NATION was a book written in truth. The Dems controlled both houses for most of the period you cite. It is true that more than 80% of our media is admittedly quite liberal. They have shaped your version of history. I blame a very bad press for much more than I blame our political problems. They hide behind and abuse the very Constitution that men like AS protect for them. Over 40 years ago a Russian Communist leader pounded a podium and predicted a collapse from within because of what has happened to the forces that corrupt America’s very existance. I have watched that with pain and sadness. I have written about some of this. I have called the Dems liars and the Republicans cowards, so I blame both almost equally. Power does corrupt and the lust for control has twisted it even though to a degree it is quite natural.
When Evan Bayh was elected to his firtt term as governor I heard Bill Clinton say that he had run as a Dem but he must represent everyone. Truer words were never spoken and a bigger lie was never told. He never led that way in his entire career but he was without question the best campaigner I have ever seen.
When I vote I split my ticket always. No party deserves blind loyalty. I also do not vote with only the last three weeks of propoganda in my mind. I remember much more than that brief period. The Dems already have a plan to eliminate even more of our rights to participate in the process. I hope Bush has enough guts to use the veto. Ignorance is the key to control and incrementalism has been the method for decades.
Go ahead and tell me I am ranting again. I may be, but it is with frustration about what is happening to my homeland.

  14. Dubai Guy Says:

Saddam was bad & so is the American foreign policy. Whoever coined the term “Dirty Politics” was very much right.

Why can’t we humans live in peace, after all we are children of the same father Adam & same mother Eve. And I am also sure that our Creator did not create us to kill each other for worldy things. Killing each other would have been justified if we lived on this earth forever. Why do we forget that all of us have to leave this world one day, some leave before us & some will leave after us.

  15. Vicki Says:

I don’t have patience for my internet connection at home. I wanted to read your blog on this comment all weekend.

I have a friend who is retired from the Army. He said that he would imagine that it took every once of will power for those Soldiers to not kill himwhen they found him in the spider hole. I would like to interview those who found him and hear their ideas on his hanging.

Personally, I think the world is a better place.

  16. Hubrious Says:

Moon you are just a partisan political hack.
Since most people in the military are now against this war in Iraq, (Military.com), and, your “side” lost the midterm elections, give it up. You discredit nobody but yourself and embarrass conservatives with real facts and valid points of view.

  17. Dubuc Says:

One down, a couple thousands to go.

  18. Veronika Says:

I don’t know how you all are going to react to my reaction, but that is not the point anyway. If I knew there might not be point of posting a reply at all.

I live in a country which was one of the first worldwide to abbolish the death sentence. And honestly I don’t see it as a real punishment. If I die all will be over. There is nothing that I have to fear after that. A lifelong imprisonment sounds way worse to me. For capital punishment being a threat you have to have a severe fear of death.

In the case of Saddam Hussein I believe that him being hanged like that made him a martyr for everyone who saw SOME good in him, and I believe that there are still plenty people who lead a much better life under his regime than they are leading now, although they were not just his supporters.

  19. Phyllis Says:

Veronika, Sometimes it is not always about ‘punishment’. It is about justice. Would humankind benefit if Saddam were to spend life in prison. No! Will the world be a better place if an ounce of oxygen is not wasted to support his sorry life for even one more breath? Yes. Enough said.

  20. moon mullins Says:

Good job Phyllis. I want to add a couple of more thoughts. economics are better served with quick justice rather than 35 years of stupid appeals that are based in hard found technicalities. Would the young lady from Royal Center, In. be alive if the murderer-molester had been put to death rather than getting life with a frigging parole? This man was a convicted molester and killer of boy boys and girls. He got out on an oversight. I am to the point of believing that judges should serve out the sentences of those they wrongly free. That happens far more often than incarcerating the innocent. That actually goes to my main point. If the suckers are dead they cannot somehow escape and do the same thing again. Better that life than any risk to any single person who could be a target for the monster. How many would Saddam have killed had he somehow gotten freed? He killed hundreds of thousands when he was not even pissed off, just as a matter of course. It is not retaliation and it is not rehabillitation. It is a deterent. If a killer is dead he ain’t gonna kill again.

  21. Veronika Says:

Phyllis, I was raised in a catholic country valuing things that the bible teaches.

One of the more important lessons I learned out of that is the lesson of mercy. I know it is not always easy and sometimes it does not seem just to act out of mercy. But honestly, who has the right to judge about the worth of someone else’s life? Does not Jesus say that “the one who has never sinned may throw the first stone”. I would never in my life see myself as THAT one. I might sound arrogant to you saying that but is there anyone who could say without lying that he has NEVER done something wrong?

Moon Mullins, I see your point, but before asking those questions, I would ask, what is it that causes out society to have that many violent criminals? Is there anything we can do to prevent this in the future. I know we will never be able to stop crime completely, but I think the crime rate has to do with what is going on those people’s environment. Otherwise there would not be such a big difference of crimerates in differnt places around the world. With this I am not directly referring to Saddam Hussein, but since you were referring to capital punishment as such you get my opinion on that too.

I could write another page on that and I would be willing to share more of my opinion, but I don’t want to force it on anyone…

  22. Phyllis Says:

    Veronika,

As a Christian, I can see your point on mercy and judging. However, I look at this entirely different. Even the Bible states the ‘wage of sin is death’. It is our choice to ‘choose’ life or death based on our acceptance of Jesus Christ as our savior. If we “choose” not to accept him, it is we that choose death. It is not what he wants for us. He died a physical death to allow us to live eternally.

If man’s law states the punishment for a crime is death. It is solely up to each person to make a choice. The justice system does not judge a person’s worth or the value of his life or soul. It judges if he is indeed guilty or not guilty of committing a crime. When Saddam committed the atrocities he committed, he surely must have known he was putting himself in a position to be hated by many. Yet, he still chose to kill innocent men, women and babies merciless, and with no conscience.

Anything can and will be taken out of context to support our personal beliefs and doctrine at times. Although I appreciate your kind heart and good intentions, I do not agree with your belief that the justice system is the enemy. Nor do I believe that Jesus expects us to ‘turn the other cheek’ to murderers. Just as I believe Jesus was kind and merciful, I also believe he will not have mercy on Satan and evil in the end. If you read Revelations you will see exactly how God feels about sin and justice. I believe the world has become a tad bit better with the riddance of a merciless murderer. If we always use the ‘those without sin cast the first stone’ verse as our platform for laws regarding punishment, there would be no accountability for anything anyone does. This verse was specific to a particular event. Although it applies to many circumstances in our Christian lives, it is not meant to be taken as permission to do as we please with no regard to consequence. With respect to your belief, hopefully we can agree to disagree.

  23. moon mullins Says:

Phyllis I do not dispute anything you say but we always have to make judgements in this life and civilization has some responsibility to protect itself from certain kinds of things. I was trying to comment on the bottom line reality of capital punishment. There are many people just born vicious. They will get away with as much as allowed and will push those boundaries as long as someone looks the other way. His supporters have killed far more people in this war than we have. We have fed and served many more than they. Jesus also got sick of the tax collectors in the temple. Not all of Saddam’s graves have been found but some people think he has slaughtered as many as 300,000 during his life time. I have no clue but his brother and another murderer are about to follow his road home and so be it. Everybody clamored to let them try these people by their rules. They were allowed that and this is the punishment. Now people are still complained. Our country is always in a “damned if you, damned if you don’t” position and that is completely wrong. Their justice system made the call and had its members slaughtered during the process. The only dance left for him was at the end of a rope.

  24. moon mullins Says:

The first comment was supposed to be directed to Veronika. Sorry for the confusion. I should not do this when I am this tired. Now I say to Phyllis that your response is wonderful and could not have been better said.

  25. John Ryan Says:

The execution of Saddam looked less official then a KKK lynching

  26. Retired Soldier Says:

    Moon,
you make a good point, but it’s closer to 750,000 Saddam has killed/murdered.

    John,
It did not have to prestigious. It just ahd to be done!

    RS

  27. moon mullins Says:

What did you want? A damned parade? They still stone people there man. This ain’t a place where they quietly inject people to death. It is supposed to be gruesome. They cut our people’s heads off and televised it for God’s sake! Get real.

  28. american dog Says:

a dead american soldier is a good american soldier…all the best to the ‘insurgents’….lets hasten the american defeat…

  29. moon mullins Says:

For all of you who wonder why some us let our emotions show. How can anyone who calls himself American say soemthing like this?

  30. Veronika Says:

    Phyllis,

I understand what you are saying but I still don’t agree with it. I understand the joice of death over life is not meant in this way. I was taught that it meant accepting Jesus Christ we choose the everlasting life over death. It means that death for those who have chosen to accept him will have only an end to life on this world but life will still go on, whereas those who have not accepted him, their life will end with death, and that is it.

Just to give you my interpretation.

  31. Chris Erickson Says:

Arrest that “dog” for treason! And have him tried by a military tribunal quickly and shot. That’s how the Greatest Generation won WW2. This generation is fast becoming the worst generation ever. It has been making so many wrong decisions that I think that this generation will fail to secure life and liberity for our future generations. Get ready to go underground those of you who love life and liberty for you are the next target.

  32. moon mullins Says:

Chris I wish I could argue with you. I worried about what lies ahead for my grandchildren.

  33. Terri Says:

Sounds like dog needs to be strung up and HUNG like Saddam was.

  34. Taylor Quilty Says:

I get it: Saddam sucks. He did evil things. Yada yada. And though what threat he was to the U.S. at the time of our invasion of Iraq, he was no doubt a dangerous man. But once his regime was over thrown, once he was captured, then his power was gone along with it his threat. And for a power hungry dictator like Saddam being helpless must have been the worst torture possible. Once his trial was over, and he couldn’t even get his fix by acting as own lawyer. Wouldn’t it then have been a worse torture to sit in a cell to hopelessly, slowly, painfully watch your death approach? Shamed after being proven guilty, hated worldwide, what could be worse? You seem to think his hanging was pretty sweet. But I think maybe you should think about what would have been worse for Saddam, not better for you. Another bit of food for thought. Saddam could now be considered a martyr. And with the video, the taunting and mocking of Saddam in his last moments, he’s become the victim. Is that what you hoped would come from his death? I don’t think so. Maybe you should have thought through your harsh post more.

  35. American Soldier Says:

    Taylor,

Nope, I meant the words I said. Yeah I think it was pretty sweet. I’ve even gone to the extent of scouring the internet to find every other video possible. I love the fact that I see Saddam dead. I think it even gets me off a little mentally. I’m not one of your politically correct soldiers. I say it as it is. I wish I was there to pull the floor from underneath him. Heck I would of stoned him even after his neck was broken.

  36. Phyllis Says:

    Taylor,

This will be my last comment on this subject as I am going to have a stroke if I talk about this any more. And the people applaud. Brace yourself! Why must you all (yes, I’m from the South) analyze everything to make sure it passes the Dr. Phil test? It is not about Saddam’s ‘feelings’ or his freaking ‘martyrdom’. Who cares if he died thinking he was a martyr? He died. He’s dead. D.E.A.D! He can’t torture anyone else, he can’t order anyone killed. Who cares what his imbecile followers think? Yeah, yeah… they’ll sit around in their hidey holes talking about what a great guy he was and how he died for their cause blah blah blah…right up until the time they too are dragged out of their bunker and into a noose. Again, I ask, who freaking cares? A vicious, evil dictator was caught, tried and found guilty in a court of law. His punishment was death by hanging. He’s gone! That being said, if he did not beg God’s forgiveness, I seriously doubt he is concerned about anything at this moment other than trying to find some cool relief for his burning ass! I do not believe that his punishment ended at the end of the rope when he drew his last breath. On the contrary, I believe that as I type this he is quite possibly being poked in the forehead with a fiery pitchfork. Take that, Saddam! Ouch. That’s gotta hurt. And…. how did that make YOU feel?

  37. moon mullins Says:

Phyllis, my Phyllis is from the south too. Bless you both. I love what you said and how you said it. AS, right on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Mariza R. Yturrios Says:

 Saddam Hussein was a stupid coward. Had he ordered all the oil fields to be blown up while he was still alive — there probably not have been a US invation/war and many lives would have been saved, American and Iraqui…

  39. moon Says:

One of the words in your first sentence applies to you. It would not have changed the need to go or what he was. At least his people still have an economy. Who do you work for? Osama?

  40. bob Says:

    Mercy for the guilty
    is cruelty to the innocent

And he was guilty—-now there will be NO jail break!!!!!!
