A day in the life of an American Soldier. The personal passages of everything from family life to war.

Big Interview II

American Soldier says,

So here is a follow up post about my interview. I find it very disheartening and funny at the same time. I’ve changed a few things for obvious reasons.

AS,

Here’s the feedback I received. We felt that you would become easily
Frustrated with the position, since you have a QA background. From our
previous experience and your answers to some of the questions in the
interview, we felt that you would be frustrated with not being able to
“fix” the issues with the customers.

Ok this is where I raised an eyebrow and was like what the fuck? I use to make decisions that could of cost the lives of my men in war and she is saying I might get frustrated by not being able to fix an issue? Ok, what else.

The role of this position is customer service instead of correcting the issues.

I thought about this for a bit and I knew I said a few times that customer service was one of my strongest attributes about myself. In fact, being in the war taught me how to be very understanding and gave me the ability to work in diverse areas under very stressful conditions. Most times not being able to find resolution but did the best we could with what we had available. I had to live, breath and nearly die by fucking frustrating policies. Can anyone say R.O.E.?

We have hired 6 QA people for previous Sr. XX XX openings and only 1 remains. Most of these individuals left within the first 3 weeks, because the way of thinking is different between QA and XXXX support.

So I guess I would be like everyone else and just follow suit? I mean I guess all blacks are the same or all white people work the same right? Shit, all people who went to the University of Pooh Dunk all act the same right? Ever heard of giving a person a chance? I told her and it was displayed in my resume that I had a diverse background not only in QA but customer service! I made sure that I defined this in the interview, leaving no room for misinterpretation in my credentials and experience.

Hope this helps. Good luck in your job search!

So that was that. I guess she felt I lacked a customer service bone in me or something. I had all the qualifications. I mean I went through 2 phone screenings and if they didn’t think I had the background they wouldn’t of had me come in for a face to face. I knew I answered their questions with pristine responses. I had never felt so confident in an interview.

Honestly, I didn’t mention once that I was a soldier nor in the war until I went in for the interview. I think I experienced my first taste of discrimination against a War Veteran. Sucks because I really wanted this position. I am not one to play the discrimination card but really, I met with 4 people that day and if one of them was against the war or had a beef, why would they hire my sorry over qualified ass? Look I don’t expect people to just hand me a position. This is a position that I was/am very qualified for. I am not an asshole, irresponsible or lacking in the customer service field. If this indeed a case of a person disliking me because of my role in our nations defense then shame on them. Karma has a strange way of coming back and biting people in the ass. If I was otherwise not qualified then so be it, maybe I am tooting my own horn. I beg to differ though.

    AS,
Sorry that the interview didn’t persuade them. Like you said, if someone didn’t like the war or had an issue with soldiers, they would not hire you and if you can prove it, that would be discrimination against you and should not have happened.

Maybe you can wait awhile and reapply for the job. I don’t know the rules on that but you can always try. My son says keep going back so they see you are really serious and they will hire you eventually!

AS, I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a bad week. Your not alone in that …..I know quite a few people who have had it really rough the last week or so. I saw a quote recently that says “When God closes one door, He opens another, though sometimes it can be hell in the hallways” I hope the hallways are short ones!!

As for the interview results, I think there are two ways to look at it. The first is what you described, questioning why they wouldn’t give you a chance, despite your ability and qualifications.

The other way is to consider the fact that 5 out of 6 people left after 3 weeks or so. It would seem there is an obvious problem there, whether is with the company or the 5 people who left. I’d tend to think the issue lies with the company. One of the things she says is “The role of this position is customer service instead of correcting the issues.” What?? Customer service is not supposed to help the customer find solutions to their problems? She also mentioned the difference in thinking between QA & Cust svc. and how you might become frustrated (and look how you described the restrictions related to ROE). Do you really want to take a risk and leave the job that you have, only to potentially find out what made the previous 5 people leave and possibly leave yourself, just as quickly, for the same reasons? IMHO, this job sounds like too much of a risk. I’d tend to see red flags here and move on.

Don’t take the results of this interview as a slam on you, your qualifications, ability or service. Somewhere out there, there is a job that is perfectly suited for you and all that you have to offer. Keep looking ’till you find it. It doesn’t sound like this one is it.

AS, the flags went up when I read that they were losing people left and right and that customer service was the goal, not fixing the problems. What?! I think you just dodged a bullet, totally figuratively speaking. Frankly, I’m grateful. That you literally dodged real bullets and that you are not working at that weird company.

If I ever witness discrimination against My Soldiers rather than giving them preferential treatment, it will not be pretty.

I prayed for you extra the other night, and I’ll pray extra for you tonight again.

    txj86, you’re included.

    Dear alexa kim:

thanks for your pray extra very very !

  9. Nolan Nelson Says:

I agree with alexa kim that you dodged a bullet. When do people not expect customer service to solve their problem? I found and find civilians are generally clueless, lazy and/or antagonistic. I went to the University of Oregon for an MBA in 1970 after 3 and a half years as both a brown and blue water Navy officer. I found acceptance with my church, and a group of former and current military in the business graduate school. At school our group banded together when we had classes with each other to beat everyone else like a drum. Ask and believe the Lord for the perseverance and confidence to hold fast to the courage, honor and dedication to success you displayed on active duty. You don’t have to settle for a job where those are not valuable attributes, but it is amazing how even private sector companies can stay in business with a half-baked approach. Welcome to the fraternity of lunatic, drug addicted, baby-killing fascist, pigs.

Now. I have some advice. And, you will think I am totally crazy but I will be damned if it doesnt work just about every time.

Schedule as many interviews as ya can, even go for jobs you are not totally qualified for or maybe dont think you want.

    Three basic rules
    1. You must NOT care whether you get the job or not. Give up
    ALL CONTROL.

    2. You must convince yerself tht the only reason you are going to
the interview is to have a great conversation with one other
person. Be honest. Be yourself. In yer world at this time
THERE IS NO REJECTION. Only people to meet. It takes the
onus off of you….no pressure….no worries mate.

    3. If ya really want to have fun with this—see how far ya can
dazzle em with B.S. From what I have read of yer writing
you seem like someone who can “read” people very well.
Tell em what they want to hear….as God is my witness they
eat it up. It is a reverse psychology of sorts. Someone with
confidence tht just doesn’t give a rip whether they hire ya or
not………the percentages are in yer favor. A little aloof?
they will beat down yer door to hire ya.

    4. If after a period of time you dont hear from them call and ask
how you could improve your technique. Dont feed into the
why you werent hired deal—remember that part is not
    important—you dont care—remember.

Life is a game, and very malleable, you must have fun with it.

I have gotten almost every job I ever tried for. I put on a great act and see just how far I can go. Always being me, and always having fun.

Lots of jobs out there and you dont have to be tied to any one of them. Start one and dont like it…..it’s ok…..start again. Why you can quit a new job as many times as ya want. Can you see the thread here……..get out of yer own way.

It’s always nice to meet new people especially when you HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

You are a winner. I can smell it. Trust Mamabear. Today is tues. March 13th, 2007. It is 10:51.

I love a good success story……..so, I will stay tuned. Good Luck and happy hunting. One person. One conversation. A day.

God bless and keep you for serving our country. I will pray for you and hold you up this week. So proud of you. Don’t forget.
